Hydration- Before, After, and During a Workout

May 4, 2023 by Lee Hersh Leave a Comment

This post is sponsored by FitFluential on behalf of Propel. I was compensated and all opinions are my own.

In this post, I will share my learnings from a seminar I took with Propel Water and Gatorade on proper hydration and nutrition for athletes and moderate exercisers.

Looking back, I wish I would have been more particular in high school in what I ate and drank during soccer season. Knowing what I know now about nutrition and hydration could have made a HUGE difference in my performance, especially for those charley horses I used to get. Have you ever had one? If you’re not familiar with the term charley horse, it’s just another way to say muscle cramp or muscle spasm in your leg. I kid you not, I would get a charley horse at least once a week, which would prevent me from being able to sprint and sometimes even walk. This is the worst feeling, especially when you’re playing in a big game.

Side note: high school soccer is where I was first introduced to Propel. My mom used to buy the lemon flavor for me way back when the entire bottle was blue 😀

There are many reasons why a charley horse can occur, and one of them is dehydration. I drank a good amount of liquid during exercise, but never made a point to make sure I was properly hydrated before the activity began. To this day, I am still guilty of not drinking enough liquid throughout the day and have suffered from severe dehydration before ← not fun.

My friends at Propel specialize in hydration. Because well, that’s who they are and what they do! As an ambassador, I took a course by Gatorade Sports Science Institute called Foods and Fluids for Fitness Athletes. It talked all about how to get the most out of your workout by fueling your body with the right foods and fluids. Today I want to share with you key highlights of what I learned so that a charley horse doesn’t sneak up on you like it has to me!

PRE-WORKOUT

What to eat and drink before you begin exercise.

  • Start hydrating 4 hours prior to exercise.
  • Drink 0.07 to 0.10 oz of fluid per pound of bodyweight. A 130-lb. woman should drink 9-13 oz. of fluid.
  • Urine should be light in color.
  • Eat a carbohydrate-rich snack 3-4 hours prior to exercise. Consume 0.45g of carbohydrate per pound of body weight. A 120-lb woman should consume around 50 grams of carbohydrates.

One of my favorite carbo-rich snacks to eat before a workout is Banana Sushi: 218 calories | 34g carbs | 11g fat | 10g protein | 16g sugar.

Banana Sushi | FitFoodieFinds.om

DURING WORKOUT

What to eat and drink during exercise.

  • Fluids should be consumed during a workout to minimize changes in body weight.
  • Be mindful of your sweat rate and don’t forget that sweat also contains sodium.
  • Fluids that have sodium in it will help you stay hydrated during your workout.
  • If the duration of your workout is long and intense, add a small carbohydrate so you can keep your body fueled.

POST-WORKOUT

What to eat and drink after you exercise.

  • Replacing lost fluids helps prepare the body for the next day’s workout.
  • Drink ~16-24 oz of fluid with sodium for every pound of weight lost during exercise.
  • Eating protein shortly after exercise will improve recovery and help get the most out of a workout.

My all-time favorite high-protein snack to teat post-workout is a Strawberry Banana Protein Slammer: 170 calories | 33g carbs | 11g protein | 17g sugar.

Strawberry Banana Protein Slammer | FitFoodieFinds.com

Looking back to my high school soccer days, I wish I would have known what I do now so I could have prevented those charley horses and made myself an all-around better athlete.

What I find interesting is that ever since I started drinking more Propel (before, after, and during workouts), I drink a lot more fluid in general. I am a huge taste person and thoroughly enjoy flavored water. AND the best part is- I’ve noticed my pee has been a lot clearer 😀

Over the next week, I will be participating in Propel’s Add Flavor Challenge. I will be…

  • Monitoring my urine color throughout the day (YAY!) <– hoping for a light like lemonade color
  • Focusing on hydrating BEFORE my workout even starts
  • Hydrating properly during my workout based on my sweat rate (~ 44 ounces per hour)
  • Rehydrating properly AFTER my workout with both fluid and sodium based on my sweat rate (~20-24 ounces of fluid)

Do you monitor your fluid intake throughout the day?

5 Tips for a Happy, Healthy Self

May 4, 2023 by Lee Hersh Leave a Comment

This post is sponsored by Glam Media on Behalf of Target Corporation. I was compensated and all opinions are my own.

I consider myself going through a bit of a transition. Even though I have been a self-employed, workin’ woman from my own home for almost a full month, I am still adjusting. I’ve made lots of new friends…aka I now use my plants as my soundboard.

I’ve also had to make lots of new adjustments to my schedule! Like #1 in the list below- actually taking a lunch break. Yes- I used to look forward to this hour of bliss, but now that I am working on my own business- it doesn’t really feel like work sometimes, so I just work work work all day long!

Here are 5 tips from Target (I HEART TARGET) for a happy, healthy self:

I’m obviously still working on #1 and #5 as well. Now that I am working from home full-time… I’ve been having a hard time separating work from life. It is essential to take breaks…especially a longer break in the middle of the work day! I lose track of time easily and sometimes work right though my lunch as I’m eating.  As for #5- I think a lot of you can relate. That dang phone seems to follow me where ever I go. I need to start taking more breaks with less screen time.

Here’s a few more to add to this list from your’s truly:

  • Eat Mindfully: Eat what and when you are craving. For me this has been essential because a lot of my work is in the kitchen. (Unfortunately I usually don’t crave veggies. More like- cereal, muesli, or granola.)
  • Love Your Body Unconditionally: Instead of pointing out the things you want to change or don’t like, focus on your va-va-voom assets! Curves are gorgeous and muscle is sexy. That’s just the way it is.
  • SWEAT (almost) every day: You guys know me, I am all about mixing up my workouts: yoga, cardio, weights, hiit, spin, you name it! Working out is my me-time and it really does rejuvenate myself. Rest days are almost as important as the exercise itself! I’m a 5-6 day a week girl at about 35-60 minutes each time!

Now I want to share some photos of me unconditionally loving my body! I had a fun little photo session with my girlfriend Brooke (THANK YOU B!) yesterday. The goal was to get a new headshot 😀 Here are some of my favorites and funny favorites.

Love these.

 favz

Love to hate these 😀

favz2

I’m just learning that I take more awkward photos than non-awkward photos and that I just need to embrace it 😀

Do you have any tips for a Happy, Healthy Self?

The MAI 2013 Spring Collection was finally released! I can now start sharing some of the AMAZING photos from the shoot I was in with them a few weeks back. Here are a few that I pulled from IG. I’ll post more of the professional photos once I get my hands on them!

Today is a pretty chill day. I am going to do some cardio and lift, think more about this whole Shark Tank thing because I am not sure if the timing is right to present a business that is really only an idea, AND go shopping for Blake’s Birthday/Mother’s Day.

VZW Voices Update

It’s been way too long since I gave you an update on my new device given to me by Verizon. It’s been a little tough for me to boggle two phones because I like everything to be in one place. My personal phone is an iphone5 and my carrier is Sprint. The one I have through the Verizon Blogger Program is a Razor HD.

photo2-1024x768

Let’s go over my favorite part of the phone/service and my least favorite part of the phone/service THUS FAR.

Favorite: Hands down is the hotspot. I am just amazed at this service in genearl. You can literally be anywhere that there is cell phone service and get wifi to any other device. A few weeks ago Blake and I went into his office that has very secure wifi and I couldn’t get on. No fear, I whipped out my phone and connected my laptop to the 4G LTE I was picking up. ZING.

Least Favorite: I’ve noticed that in general I get a lot better coverage with Verizon, but I think my house is a dead zone. I get absolutely 0 service. Blake and I both have Sprint and found that the only way to get service inside our house was to get an external antenna that we put right next to our patio door. This has seemed to fix the Sprint problem, but not the Verizon problem. I need to see if Verizon provides the same (free) service that Sprint does, and get myself an antenna so that I can get some service!

Oh! I almost forgot. I am more than obsessed with my Fitbit. I have an internal competition with myself to see if I can get more steps in than the day before. I am really wowed at by how little steps I get in during the week day EVEN when i workout, compared to on the weekends when I am GO GO GO.

“Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Health and Fitness Voices program and have been provided  with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product.”

Berry Green Layered Smoothie

Berry Green Layered Smoothie

Make this berry green layered smoothie for breakfast or a snack! It’s jam packed with fruit and antioxidants and the best part is, you get 2 flavors in one!

I was looking over the survey question I asked you guys on Monday (what kinds of recipes do you want to see more of in 2015?) and loved all of your answers! …mostly because we are all so similar! You want EASY meals made with just a few ingredients that taste good. BOOM. Here were some of the top answers…

  • Paleo Recipes (this one was probably the most prominent)
  • Single-Serve Desserts/Healthy Desserts
  • Crock-Pot/One-Pot
  • 30 Minute Meals
  • Low Carb
  • Easy Snacks

I feel like if I was an FFF reader (I kind of am), those are the exact things I would want to see For realz, I’ve been trying to eat less grains, and by trying I mean I’ve been doing a terrible job. I’ve also been trying to eat TONS more veggies, so low carb/paleo is totally the track I’m on. I also LOVE dessert..imagine that, right?

Make this berry green layered smoothie for breakfast or a snack! It’s jam packed with fruit and antioxidants and the best part is, you get 2 flavors in one!

Ingredients for Berry Green Layered Smoothie

  • mangoes
  • meal
  • Greek yogurt
  • orange juice
  • ¼ cup water
  • honey
  • spinach
  • banana, frozen
  • red berries, frozen
  • vanilla extract
  • vanilla almond milk

I’m going to be straight up- this was my attempt at a green and red festive holiday smoothie. It turned out more pink and lime green….but hey, at least it tastes good

I am a huge fan of laying and swirling flavors together. Why have 1 flavor when you can have 2?!

Really this type of smoothie can work with any 2 recipes (I’ve already got a few more combos in the works :D). These two both have a base of frozen fruit, which is definitely my preference over ice!

It kind of reminds me of a water melon. #fail

All I know, is that when it comes to smoothies….the thicker the better!

I can’t believe that I leave TOMORROW for Kansas! Blake and I are spending the holidays with his fam this year and will be in The Sass for a whole week.

Other than that…I have a few posts planned before Christmas…a really TASTY one that involves peanut butter on Sunday

Super Simple Vegan Pomegranate Clusters

May 4, 2023 by Lee Hersh Leave a Comment

Super Simple Vegan Pomegranate Clusters

Pomegranate arils are definitely one of the tastiest foods on planet Earth. It’s like an explosion of sweet deliciousness in your mouth when you crunch into them.

I was really excited when Target had pre-peeled pomegranate seeds for $2.00 off. I’ll take dos por favor! I’ve seen a similar recipe to these on Pinterest (unfortunately for the life of me I can’t find the original photo), which sparked this easy, creative Valentine’s treat!

Team, this calls for- 2 Ingredients.

  1. Vegan Chocolate Chips
  2. Fresh Pomegranate Arils
Super Simple Vegan Pomegranate Clusters #GlutenFree #Vegan

I even did the nutritional breakdown for you —-> For one pomegranate cluster: 99 calories | 6g fat | 13 g carbs | 1.6 g fiber | 1.4g protein | 11.7g sugar

For each cluster there is about 2 teaspoons of melted chocolate (one on the bottom and one on top) and about 2 teaspoons of pomegranate arils. The recipe calls for a cup of mini chocolate chips because 1 cup of chocolate chips melts down to 1/2 – 3/4 of a cup.

Super Simple Vegan Pomegranate Clusters #GlutenFree #Vegan

I’m going to see if Blake likes these tonight…but these are definitely more of a girlfriend Valentine’s treat. What girl would say no to chocolate and pomegranate?

That’s what I thought.

Maybe I should go pick up some beef jerky for the Blakester

Super Simple Vegan Pomegranate Clusters #GlutenFree #Vegan

One last thing before I go! I didn’t test these using paper cupcake liners. I used silicone, which made for a really clean removal once the chocolate froze all the way! I have had some pretty bad experiences using the paper liners, especially when trying to freeze something in them. Just beware!

So the real question is…will you be my Valentine?
